A Guide to Wastewater Treatment
Water is a transparent fluid that can be found in rain, oceans and lakes and is a major constituent of many organisms. Water molecule as chemical compound has 1 oxygen and 2 hydrogen atoms. Water is a liquid at standard pressure but this often exists on earth with its gaseous state, steam and solid state, ice. As a matter of fact, water is covering 71 percent of earth's surface.
Urban wastewater on the other hand is a different kind of water as this is a major threat both to health and to natural environment. This water should be treated well in waste water treatment plants as this can be a carrier of organic pollution.
In simpler terms, wastewater is any water that's been affected by industrial, domestic, agricultural or commercial activities. As for wastewater treatment, this is a process that is done for sole purpose of transforming wastewater that couldn't be used by humans as it is dirty to an effluent that can be reused.
The treatment is focused to eliminate dirty substances or impurities from water and to get this done, there are different methods that are used and applied in the so-called wastewater treatment plant. These wastewater treatment plants are also called as water pollution plants or waste water treatment plants that are removing pollutants from the wastewater before it could be reused again. To purify the water at the plants, there are many biological processes being followed. For the treatment, this normally takes place around 7 hours only to remove most impurities from the wastewater but in natural environment, the same process can take weeks.
Separation - in this stage, it is transferring impurities in order to remove grease, oil and solids. Most of the time, this requires the process of eliminating solids that varies depending on concentration levels of impurities.
Sedimentation - for this stage, it is using gravity in an effort to remove non-polar liquids and solids from the water. It's at this stage where the substances are actually heavier compared to water and collected at bottom of the basins. There are several other steps that should be done to complete the elimination process.
Filtration - fine solids could be removed through filtration by making use of tools like barrier which attempts to get rid of matters via which the water passes through. To remove the impurities, either biological or chemical processes would be used.
Oxidation - for this process, this works effectively in terms of reducing toxicity of impurities and that the treatment is capable of converting some impurities to water, solids and even carbon dioxide.
